CU 352 Controller Benefits

The Grundfos CU 352 control unit is the “brain” behind Hydro MPC systems, specially designed for control of parallel connected pumps.

Constant Pressure By continuously adapting pump speed to flow demand, required pressure remains constant despite fluctuations. This ensures minimum wear and tear on the pipe network. Starting and stopping speed-controlled pumps minimizes pressure surges and protects piping—eliminating water hammer.

Easy to Operate The CU 352 features a large color screen communicating in plain text with intuitive icons. The start-up wizard makes commissioning quick and easy, while help texts ensure explanatory information is always just a button press away.

Energy Reducing The CU 352 uses pump curve data to determine the most efficient speed and number of pumps to meet desired flow and pressure. Selecting the optimum number of running pumps and continuously optimizing energy usage is key to achieving lowest operating costs.

Application Optimized Functions Beyond parallel pump operation at best efficiency, the CU 352 includes special features ensuring the system performs perfectly in any application. These can be configured to match exact application requirements.

Monitoring The log feature enables performance monitoring with data displayed on the color screen or exported to PC for analysis. Monitoring makes it possible to react to problems before they occur and provides valuable data about demand changes that could indicate pipe bursts.

Communication Communicates via common Field-Bus protocols through optional communication cards. Built-in Ethernet connection enables web browser access for status viewing and settings modification. GRM communication provides logging and monitoring via mobile network—even from tablet devices.

Redundancy Assign one or more standby pumps to take over in case of failure. Extra primary sensors can be installed with continuous monitoring for discrepancy. Define how the system should react if all sensors fail.

Energy Efficiency Through Multi-Pump Operation

Municipal water systems experience consumption peaks and valleys throughout the day. While sufficient flow could be supplied by a single large pump, multiple pumps prove more economical by achieving higher efficiency at realistic flow rates.

Efficiency Comparison Example:

ConfigurationSpeedPump EfficiencyBrake Horsepower
Two pumps at 94% speed94%68.9%56.4 HP
Three pumps at 81% speed81%78.2%49.7 HP

Running three pumps instead of two at the same operating point reduces energy consumption by 12%, even when two pumps could meet the capacity requirement alone.

Proportional Pressure Control

Municipal water systems have substantial pipe friction losses. Combining VFD pump control with proportional pressure control (pipe friction loss compensation) realizes significant savings.

Non-Revenue Water Reduction Proportional pressure control drastically reduces non-revenue water from network piping leakage. Non-revenue water varies from 10% in efficient systems to 40-50% in older systems. Lowering pressure during low consumption periods reduces pipe leaking and wear, cutting both energy and maintenance costs.

Number of Pumps Optimization

The Hydro MPC’s method of evaluating running pumps is unique. Pump curve data loaded into the controller enables precise flow rate estimation. Combined with flow rate, pressures, and power data, the CU 352 calculates optimal pump start speed and number of pumps in operation to maintain the most efficient operation.

Key Benefits Summary

High Efficiency Across Flow Range Multiple pumps achieve higher efficiency throughout the entire flow range, including lower flow rates which represent the greatest percentage of operating time.

Intelligent Cascade Control Pump curve-based calculations determine optimal speed and pump count for maximum efficiency at every operating point.

Reduced Energy Costs Up to 12% additional energy savings by running the optimal pump combination rather than minimum capacity.

Lower Non-Revenue Water Proportional pressure control reduces network leakage by 10-50% depending on system age.

Pipe Network Protection Soft start/stop and pressure surge prevention eliminate water hammer and reduce pipe wear.

Remote Access Web browser access, mobile monitoring, and SCADA integration provide complete remote control capability.

System Redundancy Standby pumps and redundant sensors ensure continuous operation even during component failures.
